Le Mans 1970. A powder blue and orange Gulf-liveried Porsche 917 crossed the finish line and changed motorsport forever. The 917 was Porsche's first outright Le Mans winner — a car so fast, so brutal, and so difficult to drive that the factory drivers called it "the monster." A 4.9-litre flat-12 producing over 600 hp in a car that weighed next to nothing, hitting over 240 mph on the Mulsanne Straight.
The Gulf livery turned it into an icon. Light blue and orange shouldn't work together. Somehow it's the most beautiful racing colour combination ever put on a car. Steve McQueen agreed — he immortalised the 917 in Le Mans (1971) and made it the most famous racing car in cinema history.
